History is made as Tyddewi Herd goes under the hammer
25 September 2005
It
was 115 years to the day since the last dispersal sale at Penlan Farm, St
Davids, and yesterday's (Saturday Sept 24th) sale of pedigree Welsh Black
breeding cattle proved an enormous crowd puller.

Some 95 cattle from the famous Tyddewi Herd were sold to buyers
from all over Wales
and the West Country.
It was on September 24th 1890 that David Perkins, auctioneers
and farmer sold his assets, and ironically it was his descendant Edward Perkins
who was the joint auctioneer at yesterday's sale by former Welsh Black Cattle
Society President John Beynon and his wife Pauline who established the Tyddewi
Herd in 1976.
The top price of the day of 3,000gns was paid for a 3 1⁄2
year-old in-calf heifer - Tyddewi Morwena 4th.
Sired by Neuadd Gilbert 39th and out of Tyddewi Marie 5th (E.T.)
she was bought by partners John Parker and Alan Jones of Rhiwbina, Cardiff.

cow with her May born heifer calf Tyddewi Norma 4th at heel. She was sired by

The highest priced maiden heifer was 17 month-old Tyddewi Marie
11th (E.T.)
Sired by Rhydygarnedd Seraff 2nd and out of Tyddewi Marie 4th,
she was sold for 1,400gns to new Society members Steven and Clare Morgan,
Fenton Farm, Crundale, Haverfordwest. They bought two animals at the sale
taking their herd - which was only established in the past 12 months - to 17
animals.
One of the youngest animals at the sale was 10 month-old Tyddewi

The 11 1⁄2 year-old bull which was sired by Llandre Llewellyn and out of
Brysgaga Gwenna 7th now moves north after being bought by Messrs Jones, Top
Farm, Gwespur, Holywell, Flintshire.
Following the pedigree breeding stock, 17 steers which are all registered with
the Society were sold. Ranging from 10 to 17 months old they averaged £402
each.
"It must surely have been the sale of the century, and the
history attached to the sale made it all the more special," said Welsh Black Cattle
Society chief executive, Andrew James.
"It was tremendous to have 95 pedigree animals, all well bred by
one vendor, and at a consistent price throughout the sale. It secured buoyant
trade for John, Pauline, and their daughter Sarah."
