Literature

Here is a list of books and publications that I find useful and informative:

Insect/Invertebrate Texts

Attenborough, D. Life in the Undergrowth - a great book to accompany the wonderful BBC series.

Chinery, M. 2005. Complete British Insects - Clear, user-friendly guide for getting an idea of what you have seen. However it does by no means include all species, even common species, so do not base your identifications solely on this text.

Fowles, A. 1994. Invertebrates of Wales - Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) review of important sites and species.

McGavin. G.C. 2000. Insects and other Terrestrial Arthropods

Picker, M., Griffiths, C. & Weaving, A. 2004. Field Guide to Insects of South Africa

Skidmore, P. 1991. Insects of the British Cow-Dung Community - FSC AIDGAP Key  number 21 unfortunately out of print as it is great for dung insect identifications and lots of information on the subject.

Tilling, S.M. 1987. A Key to the Major Groups of British Terrestrial Invertebrates - FSC AIDGAP Key  number 187

Coleoptera: Beetle Texts

Bullock, J.A. 1992. Host Plants of British Beetles: A List of Recorded Associations - Amateur Entomologists' Society (AES) publication volume 11a: A supplement to A Coleopterist's Handbook.

Cooter, J. & Barclay, M.V.L. 2007. A Coleopterist's Handbook - a must-have for anyone studying or interesed in beetles. Sections on beetle families, collecting, curatorial, breeding, conservation & recording.

Evans, A.V. & Bellamy, C. L.  2000. An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles - an easy-reading, informative  coffe-table book with wonderful macro-photography by Lisa Charles Watson.

Hanski, I. & Camberfort, Y. 1991 Dung Beetle Ecology

Luff, M.H. 2007. The Carabidae (ground beetles) of Britain and Ireland - this is THE text for identifying British carabids. The new edition also has the benefit of added colour plates at the back.

Unwin, D.M. 1988 A Key to the families of British Beetles - THE text for identifying British beetles to the family level. FSC AIDGAP Key number 166.

Ecology

New, T.R. 2005. Invertebrate Conservation and Agricultural Ecosystems
